Just In: Giants hire former Titans defensive coordinator  to replace Wink Martindale

The New York Giants, under coach Brian Daboll, conducted thorough interviews for the defensive coordinator position before selecting Shane Bowen.

Daboll officially appointed Bowen on Tuesday, filling the role left vacant by the departure of veteran coordinator Wink Martindale. Martindale was let go by Daboll last month, along with two of Martindale’s defensive assistants.

Bowen brings significant experience, having spent the past six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2021 after serving as the team’s outside linebackers coach for the initial three years.

Under Bowen’s leadership as defensive coordinator, the Titans boasted impressive defensive statistics, leading the league in various categories such as red zone scoring defense, goal-to-go scoring, and third-down conversion rate in the red zone. Notably, the Titans also ranked first in the NFL for fewest rushing yards allowed per game and lowest yards per attempt.

Daboll considered a pool of at least eight candidates for the position before ultimately selecting Bowen. The 37-year-old became available following the dismissal of head coach Mike Vrabel and his coaching staff after the Titans finished with a 6-11 record, placing last in the AFC South.

Additionally, the Giants strengthened their coaching staff by appointing former Titans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly as the team’s tight ends coach on the same day.
