Former Cowboys Coach Issues Warning to Mike McCarthy Amid Job Security Concerns
If anyone understands the dynamics of the Dallas Cowboys, it’s Jason Garrett. The former Cowboys backup quarterback, offensive coordinator, and head coach from 2010 to 2019—directly preceding current coach Mike McCarthy—has unique insight into the team’s inner workings.
Amid rumors surrounding McCarthy’s future, Garrett weighed in during the Cowboys’ surprising win over the Buccaneers on Sunday night. His message to McCarthy was clear: the final three games of the season could determine his fate.
“I don’t think Jerry Jones has made up his mind yet. I believe he’ll evaluate these last three games before making a decision,” Garrett said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Coming into this season, the assumption was that McCarthy’s job security hinged on playoff success. At 6-8, out of the playoffs, and with the team regressing, these games are critical. If they win out and finish 9-8, that could build a case to keep him. But if they lose all three and end 6-11, it’s a much tougher sell to the Cowboys’ fan base.”
Mike McCarthy’s Season Under Scrutiny
McCarthy has faced job speculation all season, exacerbated by a 3-8 start that seemed to all but guarantee his departure. However, the Cowboys have rallied, winning four of their last five games, including a surprising victory over the Buccaneers, bringing their record to 7-8.
Despite injuries to key players, including star quarterback Dak Prescott, and limited offseason roster upgrades, McCarthy’s coaching has kept the team competitive. This late-season surge is strengthening his case to stay, even as he approaches the final year of his contract.
Cowboys Show Resilience Under McCarthy
McCarthy credited his players for their effort, even in challenging circumstances.
“This effort shows who they are,” McCarthy said postgame. “When I talk about having a great locker room, this is what I mean. These guys played their hearts out, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Team owner Jerry Jones echoed McCarthy’s sentiments, expressing admiration for the team’s performance and coaching.
“These guys played like they were in a championship game,” Jones said. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of them and the staff. It really showed me something.”
What’s Next for McCarthy?
As the Cowboys approach their final games, McCarthy’s future remains uncertain. While his recent success has given him a stronger case to stay, the outcome of the remaining matchups will likely shape Jerry Jones’ decision. For now, the pressure is on McCarthy and his team to finish strong and prove their resilience to both fans and management.
