The Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly pursuing a high-leverage reliever, with both teams expressing interest in All-Star closer Ryan Helsley. According to Nick Deeds of MLB Trade Rumors, Helsley is on their radar, but the St. Louis Cardinals remain firm in their stance that he is not available.
“This aligns with earlier reports suggesting the Cardinals are unlikely to trade Helsley this offseason,” Deeds noted, referencing comments from Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, who indicated Helsley is expected to stay with the team through 2025.
While the Cardinals’ reluctance suggests they plan to retain Helsley, it doesn’t guarantee he won’t be moved, as trade negotiations often evolve. Mozeliak understands the strategic importance of Helsley as a trade asset.
The Diamondbacks’ interest in a closer has been clear since they narrowly missed acquiring Devin Williams, who was traded to the Yankees. Similarly, the Blue Jays are prioritizing pitching as they aim to strengthen their roster around Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
If Helsley remains unavailable, both teams have alternative options in free agency. Proven closers like Kenley Jansen, Tanner Scott, and Kirby Yates are viable targets, while veteran David Robertson offers a more affordable option for contending teams.
