Yankees Encouraged to Pursue $210 Million Ace Corbin Burnes After Missing Out on Juan Soto
After losing Juan Soto to the Mets following a fierce bidding war, the Yankees must shift focus and utilize the $760 million they offered Soto to rebuild their roster. The team faces critical upgrades across its rotation, bullpen, infield, and outfield ahead of Opening Day.
Jacob Mountz of FanSided has advocated for the Yankees to prioritize strengthening their starting rotation, recommending Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes as the ideal target. Burnes, projected to sign a seven-year, $210 million contract according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, is considered the top pitcher available this offseason.
“Corbin Burnes is currently the prize of the pitching market. He is coming off another spectacular year in which he threw to a 2.92 ERA with 181 strikeouts through 194.1 innings,” Mountz wrote. “Burnes is an annual Cy Young contender, having been in the race every year since 2020, and he won the award in 2021 with a dominant 2.43 ERA. Pairing him with Gerrit Cole at the top of the rotation could create an unbeatable 1-2 punch that would stymie opposing hitters and make the Yankees championship contenders even without Soto.”
While the Yankees’ lineup has notable gaps, Burnes’ elite talent makes him a priority. Over the past five seasons, he has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Though the Orioles lack the financial resources to retain Burnes, the Yankees may need to outbid the Boston Red Sox in a competitive market to secure the ace.
Adding Burnes could be the transformative move the Yankees need to reclaim their championship ambitions.
