Two Clemson Tigers Players Announce Departures Ahead of Bowl Season
Clemson football faces significant roster changes as two players have announced they will be leaving the program. Senior wide receiver Darius Mitchell and junior defensive lineman Ethan Caldwell confirmed their decisions to step away from the Tigers, marking the end of their Clemson careers.
Darius Mitchell: A Veteran Leader
Mitchell, a key veteran for Clemson’s receiving corps, shared his decision on social media. “This program has given me so much, but it’s time to close this chapter and pursue new opportunities,” he wrote. Known for his reliable hands and leadership, Mitchell finishes his Clemson tenure with over 1,500 career receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He plans to prepare for the NFL Draft, where scouts are eyeing him as a potential late-round pick or priority free agent.
“Darius has been an incredible competitor and teammate,” head coach Dabo Swinney said. “We’ll miss his energy and experience, but we’re excited to see him take the next step in his career.”
Ethan Caldwell: A Rising Star Moving On
Defensive lineman Ethan Caldwell is also departing, though under different circumstances. The junior, who notched 6.5 sacks and 40 tackles this season, announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. “I’m grateful for everything Clemson has done for me, but I feel it’s the right time to seek a fresh start,” Caldwell stated.
Caldwell’s exit leaves a notable gap in Clemson’s defensive front, though Swinney expressed his support. “Ethan’s growth over the years has been tremendous. While we’ll miss him on the field, we respect his decision and wish him nothing but success.”
What’s Next for Clemson?
Both departures come as Clemson wraps up a 9-2 regular season and prepares for a bowl game. While the losses are impactful, the Tigers remain optimistic about their depth. Young players like sophomore receiver Trey Daniels and freshman defensive tackle Marcus Wynn are expected to step up in expanded roles next season.
