The New York Yankees could lose former closer Clay Holmes to a division rival, with Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicting he’ll sign a two-year, $24 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles in free agency. Holmes, who lost the Yankees’ closer role in September, rebounded as a setup pitcher in the playoffs. Despite his struggles, he was still a valuable bullpen piece, and Kelly suggests his control issues make it unlikely he’ll return to New York, though he’s expected to find interest from other contenders.
Holmes, an All-Star in 2024, saw a decline in performance in the latter half of the season, posting a 3.75 ERA in 27 games after the All-Star break compared to his 2.77 ERA in the first half. Yet he was reliable in the playoffs, where he achieved a 2.25 ERA over 13 appearances. Should Holmes join Baltimore, he would serve as a setup man for closer Félix Bautista, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, and add depth to a competitive AL East rival.
Though Holmes faced late-season struggles, the Yankees continued to trust him in high-stakes situations. Manager Aaron Boone expressed ongoing confidence, noting that Holmes’ command wasn’t significantly off and praising his end-of-season and playoff performances. Holmes himself acknowledged the adjustments he made, particularly focusing on using his sinker more effectively.
A two-time All-Star in 2022 and 2024, Holmes’ departure would leave a void in the Yankees’ bullpen while potentially strengthening one of their key division opponents.
