The Braves may turn to free agency to find a long-term replacement for Orlando Arcia at shortstop, though this issue could take a backseat due to other pressing matters involving key players like Joe Jimenez, Spencer Strider, and Ronald Acuña Jr. Despite Arcia’s struggles at the plate, he continues to contribute defensively, and with limited free-agent options, the Braves have managed to win with him in the lineup.
While Willy Adames would be an ideal fit, his expected price tag of over $150 million is too high for Atlanta, especially given their budget constraints compared to teams like the Dodgers and Mets. The Braves are likely to prioritize filling other roster needs over making a big splash for a single player. However, a name that has flown under the radar is Ha-Seong Kim.
The 29-year-old utility infielder has opted out of his contract with the Padres and is now a free agent. MLB Trade Rumors anticipates he’ll secure a one-year, $12 million deal, a reasonable amount for a player of his skill set, and at least one writer suggests the Braves could be his landing spot. Though the idea of adding another injury-prone player who may not be ready for Opening Day might not be appealing, it fits the mold of the type of deal Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos tends to pursue in the offseason.
If Kim were healthy, he could command a lucrative multi-year contract. However, due to his injury status, he may settle for a one-year deal, using the opportunity to improve his value before hitting the market again next year when he’ll still be just 30 years old.
In the meantime, the Braves have a capable stopgap in Arcia, who has been the starting shortstop for the past two seasons, making it a good fit if Kim isn’t ready to start the season. If no other team is willing to offer Kim a long-term deal, this could be a perfect opportunity for Atlanta to sign him on a short-term basis while he recovers.
