Scott Kingery’s tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies has come to an end after nearly a decade in the organization. On Friday, the Phillies traded the 30-year-old to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations.
Kingery, a former top prospect for the Phillies, last appeared in the majors in 2022. Over the past four years, however, he spent the majority of his time with the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. In 2023, Kingery posted a solid .268/.316/.488 line with 25 home runs and 67 RBIs at Triple-A.
The Phillies drafted Kingery in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually earning the top spot in the team’s prospect pool. In 2018, before even making his MLB debut, Kingery signed a six-year contract with the Phillies.
After an impressive spring training in 2018, Kingery made the Phillies’ Opening Day roster. However, his rookie season was challenging. Used in a utility role rather than at his natural second base position, he struggled, finishing with a .226 batting average, a .605 OPS, and 126 strikeouts in 147 games. Kingery showed some improvement in 2019 with a .788 OPS and 101 OPS+ over 126 games, but his 2020 campaign was marred by injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic. He hit just .159 with 35 strikeouts in 36 games that year. Kingery’s struggles continued in 2021, and after a rough spring training, he was sent to Triple-A, appearing in just 15 games for the Phillies that season and one game in 2022.
