Lucas Giolito has made a clear choice regarding his contract with the Boston Red Sox for the 2025 season by exercising his $19 million option, as announced by the team. This decision was anticipated, given that it wouldn’t have made sense for him to enter free agency after missing the entire 2024 season due to elbow surgery. Giolito is expected to participate in spring training, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll be fully ready to pitch at the start of the season. He will need to pass several evaluations to secure a spot in the Red Sox rotation and demonstrate that he can handle the demands of being a regular starter.
The 30-year-old Giolito has primarily played for the Chicago White Sox during his eight-year career, known for his reliability in the rotation. He achieved 30 or more starts in three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023. His standout year was 2019, when he recorded a 14-9 record with a 3.41 ERA and 228 strikeouts over 176.1 innings, earning him a spot on the American League All-Star team. Before his surgery, Giolito was regarded as a workhorse pitcher. Along with his consistency in recent years, he has another season with over 30 starts and one with 29 starts. It has been challenging for him to watch his new Red Sox teammates compete in the American League East without being able to contribute.
