The Packers secured a narrow victory over an AFC South opponent for the second consecutive week, thanks to a late field goal from new kicker Brandon McManus. His 24-yard kick helped fend off a late rally by Jacksonville, resulting in a 30-27 win and improving Green Bay’s record to 6-2. However, the main focus of the game was quarterback Jordan Love, who struggled due to a groin injury sustained early in the first drive. He was ultimately replaced by Malik Willis in the third quarter.
After the game, Coach Matt LaFleur expressed his worries about Love’s condition, admitting he was unsure of the injury’s severity. “I have no idea,” LaFleur said when asked about Love’s groin issue. “But there’s definitely a high level of concern anytime a player is dealing with something like that. He started showing signs of struggle early, and it became clear he couldn’t protect himself, which is why we went with Malik.”
While on the field, Love completed 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards and an interception but had noticeable difficulties moving in the pocket. In contrast, Willis stepped in effectively, completing 4 of 5 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, and rushing four times for 23 yards. A key 20-yard scramble by Willis late in the third quarter helped set up the Packers’ go-ahead touchdown.
“Malik did an outstanding job stepping in; he never shies away from the moment,” LaFleur praised. “He made several crucial plays, both through the air and on the ground.” LaFleur also mentioned the adjustments made to the play-calling to accommodate Willis. “It’s always challenging when you have to switch to a backup, as they usually run the scout team during practice. He didn’t have any reps with our game plan,” LaFleur noted.
The timing of Love’s injury is particularly concerning, as the Packers face Detroit in Week 9—a crucial matchup that could heavily influence the NFC North standings. Green Bay will have a bye in Week 10.
