Tigers Bench Coach a Candidate for White Sox Managerial Job, Report Says
DETROIT — Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard has been identified as a potential candidate for the Chicago White Sox’s open managerial position, according to a report by Sox Machine.
The White Sox parted ways with Pedro Grifol in August, finishing the season with Grady Sizemore as interim manager after setting an MLB record with 121 losses in 2024.
Lombard, 49, was previously considered for the Tigers’ managerial role in 2020, a job that eventually went to A.J. Hinch. He later joined Hinch’s coaching staff as the bench coach.
A former player, Lombard appeared in parts of six major league seasons, including 72 games with the Tigers in 2002. Originally from Atlanta, he was drafted out of high school by the Braves in 1994. After his playing career, Lombard served as a coach and manager in the Boston Red Sox system from 2010 to 2014, and worked in player development for the Braves in 2015.

Lombard also spent five years as the first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping them reach the playoffs five times, including two National League Championship appearances. He is one of three coaches who have been with Hinch throughout his tenure in Detroit, alongside pitching coach Chris Fetter and assistant pitching coach Juan Nieves.
Hinch recently mentioned his intent to retain his coaching staff for 2024 but acknowledged that other teams might attempt to lure away some of his staff during the offseason.
