The Buffalo Bills Part Ways with Two-Time Super Bowl Champion WR

The Buffalo Bills made room for Amari Cooper by releasing a veteran wide receiver who struggled to find his place in the offense. Just hours after finalizing a trade for Cooper from the Cleveland Browns, the Bills announced they had cut Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Valdes-Scantling, a former Kansas City Chiefs receiver who joined Buffalo this offseason, had been hampered by injuries in training camp and never established a role during the season.

Valdes-Scantling, who won two Super Bowl titles with the Chiefs, played in six games for Buffalo, recording just two catches for 26 yards. The Bills’ offensive strategy this season has been to spread the ball among multiple receivers, with players like Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and tight end Dalton Kincaid all surpassing 200 receiving yards in six games. Valdes-Scantling, however, contributed the least, participating in just 39.1% of offensive snaps and having no impact on special teams.

The Bills now turn their focus to integrating Cooper, though head coach Sean McDermott is unsure how quickly the star wide receiver will adapt to their system. McDermott emphasized that while Cooper is a talented addition, the team will continue to rely on its current wide receiver group until Cooper is fully up to speed. Cooper, who had 72 receptions for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns last season, has seen a drop in production with 24 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns in six games this year due to struggles within the Browns’ offense.
