Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow made a surprising admission after the team’s overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Despite Burrow having one of the best regular-season performances of his career, completing 30-of-39 passes for 392 yards and five touchdowns, the Bengals still fell 41-38, dropping to 1-4 on the season.
Burrow bluntly stated that the Bengals are “not a championship-level team” at the moment, a striking comment given the team’s high expectations entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations. However, Burrow expressed hope that Cincinnati could improve and reach that level as the season progresses.
In his postgame comments, Burrow acknowledged the team’s struggles, saying, “We’re not a championship-level team right now… I like to think that we’ll come back and improve throughout the season to get to that point, but right now we are not, and we have to get better.” He also noted the need for reflection, reviewing game tape, and identifying areas for improvement.

Burrow’s frustration with the team’s slow start was evident. “I know exactly how we are 1-4,” he added. “We’re not making plays at the end of the game to go and win it. Definitely not in disbelief. I know exactly what’s happening.”
Slow starts have been a trend under head coach Zac Taylor. The Bengals began the 2023 season 1-3 and barely missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record. In 2022, they started 2-3 before finishing 12-4, but this time the slow start may have caught up with them sooner than expected.
