Yankees first baseman is working hard to recover from fractured fingers, making his availability for the Division Series uncertain as the team gears up to face the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Rizzo sustained two finger fractures after being hit by a pitch during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the final weekend of the regular season. With just two days remaining before the ALDS, Rizzo has yet to resume any baseball activities, casting doubt on his readiness.
According to Yankees insider Bryan Hoch, General Manager Brian Cashman has confirmed that Rizzo is considered a “long shot” to be ready for the series. Even if healthy, Rizzo’s performance this season has been subpar, with a .637 OPS and struggles since returning from a previous hand injury. The Yankees now face a challenge at first base, as both Oswaldo Cabrera and Ben Rice are options, but neither has significantly outperformed Rizzo.
Though Rizzo hasn’t been officially ruled out for the postseason, his participation in the Division Series appears highly unlikely.
