Trade Proposal Suggests Red Wings Acquiring Stanley Cup-Winning Defenseman
As the Detroit Red Wings aim to end their playoff drought, one trade proposal has them acquiring Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Jack Johnson from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a user proposed a one-for-one swap, with the Red Wings acquiring Johnson and the Blue Jackets getting Olli Maatta. Johnson, who signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with Columbus this offseason, would bring veteran leadership and playoff experience to Detroit, serving as a mentor for younger players and potentially filling a sixth or seventh defenseman role. Johnson, who won the Stanley Cup in 2022 with the Colorado Avalanche, has played 1,187 NHL games, tallying 77 goals and 259 assists.
In return, Columbus would receive Maatta, who is in the final year of his two-year, $6 million deal. Maatta could replace Johnson on the Blue Jackets’ blue line, offering more offensive upside. He could also serve as a trade asset for Columbus if the team falls out of playoff contention.
Johnson, who spent parts of seven seasons with the Blue Jackets, was eager to return to Columbus in free agency, citing his love for the area and its importance to his family. He’s ready to contribute in any role, whether on the power play or penalty kill, while bringing a physical, old-school approach to the game.

Detroit, focused on improving defensively for the 2024-25 season, has already added goalie Cam Talbot and defenseman Erik Gustafsson to strengthen the team. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman emphasized the importance of solid defense and special teams to long-term success, and adding a player like Johnson could bolster Detroit’s defensive depth.
The Red Wings begin their 2024-25 season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
