JUST IN: Lions confirms signing of veteran first-round cornerback to boost team spirit.

The Detroit Lions have had a strong defensive start to the season, but some still see potential issues in the secondary that could become problematic. Despite the progress, with the team ranking 14th in pass defense after three weeks (allowing 216.7 yards per game and three passing touchdowns), at least one analyst believes the Lions could benefit from a trade.

Bleacher Report suggests Detroit should target Buffalo Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam, a former first-round pick. While cornerback remains a long-standing concern for the Lions, Kristopher Knox of B/R lists Elam as a potential trade candidate, noting that the third-year player hasn’t fully broken out due to limited opportunities behind Christian Benford. Elam, selected 23rd overall in 2022, has shown promise with 56 tackles, two interceptions, and four passes defended over two seasons, though injuries and coaching decisions have limited his impact.

While a trade for Elam could provide Detroit’s secondary with a fresh start, it’s unclear if he would make an immediate difference. Giving up assets for an unproven player may not be the best move, especially as the Lions’ secondary has performed well recently. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism after a strong defensive showing against the Arizona Cardinals, where players like Kirby Joseph, Carlton Davis, Aidan Hutchinson, DJ Reader, and Brian Branch stood out. Campbell praised their effort, particularly noting their resilience on third downs and in limiting explosive plays. This growing chemistry within the secondary may make a trade less urgent at this point in the season.
