The Chicago Cubs are searching for bullpen reinforcements after missing out on top free-agent relievers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates. Both players are reportedly heading to the Los Angeles Dodgers, prompting the Cubs to rethink their strategy as they prepare for spring training.
Scott signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Dodgers, reflecting the high demand for elite bullpen talent. Meanwhile, Yates is also expected to join the reigning World Series champions, leaving the Cubs with limited options.
Despite these setbacks, the Cubs remain committed to bolstering their bullpen. According to Patrick Mooney of *The Athletic*, the team, led by Jed Hoyer, is exploring free-agent and trade options to fill the void.
Potential Bullpen Targets
Free agents under consideration include Kenley Jansen, David Robertson, Phil Maton, Ryne Stanek, and Brooks Raley. Jansen and Robertson offer extensive postseason experience, while Maton and Stanek bring upside and versatility.
Raley, originally drafted by the Cubs in 2009, could be an intriguing option but is unlikely to be available until later in the season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Another standout target is Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly. Per Chandler Rome of *The Athletic*, the Cubs are among several teams showing interest in the two-time All-Star, who is reportedly being shopped by the Astros.
Pressly, 36, boasts a 2.78 ERA in 47 postseason appearances and a World Series title. While he has recently transitioned from closer to setup man, his experience and reliability remain appealing. The Astros, aiming to stay under the $241 million luxury tax threshold after the Kyle Tucker trade, may look to shed Pressly’s $14 million salary. For the Cubs, his one-year contract and potential as a closer make him an ideal fit. A strong season with the Cubs could also lead to a contract extension if both sides are interested.
With free-agent options dwindling, the Cubs are expected to ramp up trade talks. Landing a proven arm like Pressly would address their immediate bullpen needs and signal their determination to compete in the NL Central. For a team eager to return to postseason contention, securing a reliable reliever could be the final piece to their puzzle.
