The New York Rangers are facing a significant challenge in their contract negotiations with All-Star goaltender Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin has made it clear that he will not discuss a contract extension during the regular season, leaving the Rangers with just over two weeks before the season opener to resolve the matter. According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, Shesterkin is seeking a $12 million annual average salary, which would make him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history. While he expressed his love for the team and city, his comments left the door open regarding his future.
With an estimated $33.8 million in cap space for next summer, the Rangers also need to consider re-signing key players like Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafreniere, and Ryan Lindgren. Although they would like to meet Shesterkin’s demands, the financial implications are serious. If the Rangers don’t reach a deal before October 9th, Shesterkin could enter free agency, where other teams may be willing to meet his price. The Rangers must act quickly to avoid letting this situation overshadow their season.
