Braves fan favorite has officially retired from baseball, revealing the final factor that led to his decision. The former utilityman and occasional relief pitcher, known for his leadership in the Atlanta clubhouse and resemblance to Dansby Swanson, shared his story in a recent interview. Despite not having standout career statistics, Culberson’s value to the Braves extended far beyond the numbers. However, his struggles at the plate eventually made it hard for Atlanta to keep him on the active roster, prompting the 35-year-old to reevaluate his career path.

Culberson attempted a late-career transition to pitching, taking the mound during spring training and for the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. But when Atlanta ultimately informed him that the switch wasn’t going to work, Culberson accepted that his playing days were over. “Once the Braves told me it wouldn’t work, I knew I was done,” he explained. Though difficult to process at first, Culberson came to terms with the decision, saying, “I realized I gave it my best, and I’m at peace with that.”
Braves manager Brian Snitker had always been supportive of Culberson, though he made it clear that no special treatment would be given, even as late as March. Culberson’s journey came to an end after 11 years in the majors, having played just one game in 2023, and his attempt to extend his career as a pitcher fell short.
