JUST IN: Auburn lands commitment of a 5-star world class player

Auburn football secures a commitment from 5-star linebacker Elijah Melendez. After a week of anticipation, head coach Hugh Freeze revealed that redshirt freshman Hank Brown would start over Payton Thorne in their game against the New Mexico Lobos, following a tough home loss to Cal. While fans were eager for Brown’s debut, the weekend excitement extended beyond the game.

Earlier in the day, Elijah Melendez, a 4-star linebacker from Kissimmee, Florida, announced his commitment to Auburn. Ranked as the No. 17 linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 23 prospect in Florida, Melendez had initially committed to Miami in December 2023. However, Auburn continued its pursuit, and Melendez decommitted from Miami in late August, officially committing to the Tigers during his visit to campus before the New Mexico game.

A key factor in Melendez’s decision was his connection with Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin. “It feels like family here, and I wanted to play in the SEC,” Melendez shared with Auburn Rivals. He added that he believes Auburn and Coach Durkin can help him develop and reach the NFL.
