The New York Yankees have released left-handed reliever after his struggles in Triple-A. Gonzalez, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in an offseason trade that also brought in prospect Jorbit Vivas, was designated for assignment in June to make room on the roster. While Gonzalez posted a respectable 3.86 ERA in the majors, his performance in Triple-A, with a 4.50 ERA over 22 innings, failed to meet expectations.
Though the trade cost the Yankees top prospect Trey Sweeney, who is now with the Detroit Tigers, it wasn’t a complete loss as Vivas remains a promising part of their future. Gonzalez’s release signals the end of his time with the Yankees, but he may find opportunities elsewhere as a free agent for the remainder of the season.
