Former Yankees Playoff Pitcher James Paxton Plans to Retire After the Season
James Paxton, known for his crucial playoff performances with the New York Yankees, has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2024 MLB season. In an interview with Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, Paxton confirmed his decision, revealing that he has already discussed it with his wife and his agent, Scott Boras.
“It’s a tough decision, but after this season, I’m planning to retire and move on to the next chapter of my life,” Paxton stated. “I believe I can still compete and contribute to a team’s success, but my family needs me at home right now.”
The 36-year-old left-hander, who will be celebrating his birthday later this year, has spent his 11th MLB season with his fourth team. Paxton began his career with the Seattle Mariners, where he emerged as a solid mid-rotation starter, recording a 2.98 ERA in 2017 and 208 strikeouts in 2018. He was later traded to the New York Yankees, where he had a standout 2019 season, finishing with a 15-6 record and delivering a critical Game 5 start in the ALCS against the Houston Astros.
However, recent seasons have been marred by injuries for Paxton. He underwent spinal surgery in 2020 and Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for most of 2021 and 2022. This season, he made 21 starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and then the Boston Red Sox, who re-signed him before the trade deadline. Unfortunately, he was placed on the 60-day injured list last month due to a calf strain, and will only be able to return if the Red Sox, who currently have a 74-72 record, make a deep playoff run.
With over $50 million in career earnings and a no-hitter to his name, Paxton is ready to step away from the game. Although the baseball community will miss his memorable moments and contributions, Paxton is eager to focus on his family and embrace the next phase of his life.
