The Chicago Cubs have bolstered their roster with the addition of utility infielder Jon Berti, reportedly signing the free agent to a deal with undisclosed terms, according to Robert Murray of Fansided.
Berti, who has primarily played for the Miami Marlins throughout his career, spent last season with the New York Yankees after being traded there in the spring. However, the Yankees chose not to tender him a contract on November 3, making him a free agent.
The 34-year-old brings exceptional versatility to the Cubs, having played nearly every position on the field. Known for his blazing speed, Berti led all of Major League Baseball in stolen bases in 2022, swiping 41 bags in just 102 games. Since debuting in 2018 at the age of 28, he has quietly established himself as one of the league’s most reliable utility players.
Last season, Berti played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ postseason run. He stepped in at first base during the American League Division Series after Anthony Rizzo was sidelined with an injury and excelled at the unfamiliar position. His defensive skills are particularly strong at third base, where he recorded 2 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) in just 18 games in 2024.
While Berti is unlikely to claim a full-time starting role with the Cubs, his skill set makes him a valuable asset. His speed, defensive versatility, and serviceable bat will allow him to fill in as a pinch runner, platoon starter, or replacement for injured infielders. The Cubs stand to benefit from his ability to contribute in multiple roles next season.
