After a remarkable season with the Phillies, Buddy Kennedy’s focus now shifts to the challenges of spring training and securing a spot on the team’s roster. Kennedy, a 2017 graduate of Millville High School, experienced a whirlwind year in 2024. After starting the season with the St. Louis Cardinals and a brief stint with the Detroit Tigers, he was traded to the Phillies in June. He spent time with their Triple-A affiliate before earning a call-up to the big league club in August and again in September.
Fans at Citizens Bank Park cheered his name as he delivered key hits during the Phillies’ playoff push. Reflecting on the season, Kennedy described it as a dream come true, especially given the stark contrast between how it began and how it unfolded. Despite limited opportunities, he posted a .689 OPS in a small sample of major league at-bats and demonstrated improved power at the plate.
Kennedy’s connection to the Phillies runs deep. A lifelong fan, he grew up idolizing players from the team’s 2008 World Series championship roster. His grandfather, Don Money, also played for the Phillies, making Kennedy’s journey even more meaningful.
Heading into spring training, Kennedy faces stiff competition for the final spot on the Phillies’ bench. Players like Wes Wilson and Kody Clemens are also in the mix, but Kennedy’s lack of minor league options adds urgency to his case. If he doesn’t secure a roster spot, he must go through waivers before being assigned to the minors, potentially making him available to other teams.
Despite the uncertainties, Kennedy remains positive and focused on controlling what he can: his attitude, work ethic, and performance. “It’s all about proving myself,” he said. “If I can show I’m a reliable option, it’ll be a dream come true.”
Phillies pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater, Florida, on February 12, with the first full-squad workout scheduled for February 17. For Kennedy, the stakes couldn’t be higher as he looks to build on a memorable 2024 season and continue chasing his dream.
