Auburn Tigers quarterback Payton Thorne expressed optimism about the team’s performance in their season opener against Alabama A&M, emphasizing that there’s a solid foundation to build on. In their first game of the 2024 season, the Tigers dominated with a 73-3 victory, largely thanks to Thorne’s impressive first-half showing. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns before sitting out the second half.
Thorne highlighted the importance of Auburn’s ability to execute big plays, noting that connecting on deep passes and finishing drives in the end zone was crucial. He emphasized that seeing these results against another team, rather than just in practice, is significant and gives the team something to build on moving forward.
Reflecting on the game, Thorne mentioned how the offense’s success bolstered their confidence, which will be beneficial as the season progresses. He pointed out the value of performing well in front of fans, under the lights, and in their own jerseys, saying that it’s important to carry the positive aspects forward while also learning from any mistakes on tape.
The victory over Alabama A&M also marked Auburn’s 800th win as an FBS team, a milestone that Thorne found meaningful. He acknowledged the school’s rich tradition and the honor of being part of a program with such a storied history.
Looking ahead, Thorne is confident in both himself and Auburn’s offense as they prepare for their next challenge against Cal at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Cal, who struggled in the first half against UC Davis before pulling away, will be Auburn’s next test as they continue their 2024 campaign.
