Brent Pry Highlights Kyron Drones’ Significant Progress at Virginia Tech
Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones is making strides toward becoming one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC for 2024. After transferring from Baylor, Drones made a strong impression during the final two months of the 2024 season, helping to turn Virginia Tech’s season around from a 1-3 non-conference start to a 5-3 finish in the ACC, securing bowl eligibility.
Senior Grant Wells was initially named the starter for the season, which came as no surprise. Head coach Brent Pry even mentioned that there were specific plays designed for Drones, who saw some action in Week 2 against Purdue. However, after Wells was injured during that game, Drones took over as the starter, and the team saw a noticeable shift in performance.
As Drones gained experience and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen adjusted the playbook to suit his skills, the Hokies transformed into a more competitive team. Drones’ performance, both passing and running, was impressive. Recently, Pry spoke with ESPN, revealing that Drones is focusing on improving one key aspect of his game as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Last season, Drones posted a 17-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio, surpassing many expectations. His ability to run the ball effectively opened up opportunities in the passing game, aided by the emergence of wide receivers Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane. According to Pry, Drones is working on enhancing his leadership skills and refining his passing, particularly in making tight-window throws.
“He’s becoming more competitive with those tight-window throws, placing the ball where it needs to be more consistently. He’s learning to manipulate coverages and defenders, doing things that, as a first-year starter, he might not have considered or been asked to do. He’s also continuing to grow into the leader he can be,” Pry explained.
Drones possesses the tools to improve as a passer this season. With the return of wide receiver Ali Jennings and the continued development of his other targets, coupled with a full offseason in Blacksburg to familiarize himself with the Hokies’ offense, Drones is poised to elevate Virginia Tech’s offensive performance in 2024 by mastering tight-window throws and effectively moving defenders.
