Sean Payton has finally given Broncos fans the news they’ve been waiting for: the Denver Broncos have their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. On Wednesday, Payton announced that rookie Bo Nix will lead the team this fall.
Nix was one of three contenders for the position. Veteran Jarett Stidham started in the first preseason game but had limited action before Nix took over, even playing with the first team. Zach Wilson also saw some time on the field against the Colts with the Broncos’ backups. Stidham had finished last season as the Broncos’ starter, while Wilson was acquired this offseason after struggling during his time with the Jets.
In making the announcement, Payton said, “After discussing with George [Paton] and Greg [Penner], we know these decisions often resolve themselves, but we’re not rushing it. It’s crucial for the team that we approach it this way. Bo has been excellent, though there’s plenty of room for growth. He has a lot to work on, but I’ve already spoken with all three of the quarterbacks, and they’ll be valuable resources for both Bo and Zach. We’ve made some solid choices, and we’ll see how they play out as the season progresses.”
Nix, 24, was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by Denver after a standout final season with the Oregon Ducks, where he was a Heisman Trophy contender. Nix had a remarkable college career, starting for five years between the Ducks and Auburn Tigers, and ended last season as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns with just three interceptions, adding another 234 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. In 2022, he showcased his mobility by rushing for 510 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Payton noted, “There’s a maturity in Bo that sets him apart from many rookies, likely due to the unique circumstances of the COVID era. You can see it in how he handles the media and other pressures.”
In his first two preseason appearances, Nix has impressed with a 116.7 passer rating, second among all quarterbacks, completing 23 of 30 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
However, Payton clarified that this decision doesn’t guarantee Nix the starting role for all 17 games.
