Kalen DeBoer’s Optimism Shines as Tide’s Defense Impresses During ‘Gump Day’
The SEC contenders are now facing challenges that Alabama has navigated for nearly two decades. Injuries, though unfortunate, are a reality of the game, and this offseason has seen some significant ones. Texas lost its top two running backs, Georgia is feeling the strain after losing numerous players early, and Oklahoma lost its star wide receiver. These three teams are either on Alabama’s schedule this fall or are likely to meet them in Atlanta, barring any major upsets.
DeBoer expressed his satisfaction with the defense, noting, “I love what I see right now.” He highlighted that while there are more differences between Nick Saban’s defense and Kane Wommack’s in the secondary, the players are adapting well and excelling in execution, allowing the team to really unleash their potential.
DeBoer mentioned specific players like Malachi Moore and Keon Sabb, emphasizing his confidence in cornerback Domani Jackson. He’s also excited about the freshmen defensive backs, who are eager and improving daily. In the front seven, DeBoer called Deontae Lawson a “mainstay” at linebacker and praised interior players Tim Smith and Tim Keenan. He’s particularly enthusiastic about LT Overton and Jah-Marien Latham on the edges, noting their effectiveness both in pass-rushing and in holding up against the run.
DeBoer’s optimism is infectious, even if it’s typical for the preseason. His enthusiasm is perhaps the most encouraging sign since the A-Day game. Wommack, the defensive coordinator, also shared his thoughts, expressing confidence in the linebacking corps, which was seen as a question mark outside of Lawson and Campbell.
Wommack discussed the Inside Linebacker room, focusing on Jihaad Campbell, who returns for his junior year after a strong sophomore season. Wommack praised Campbell’s skills and leadership, even suggesting he could be trusted with the green dot helmet during games. He also noted how Campbell and Lawson are setting a great example for the younger players. Lawson, who has grown into a leadership role since his freshman year in 2021, now serves as a mentor to the younger players, sharing his experiences and encouraging them to stay focused and keep improving.
Alabama’s final preseason scrimmage is approaching, with an emphasis on eliminating explosive plays and improving communication, as the Crimson Tide prepares for the season opener and the start of the Kalen DeBoer era.

The ingredients for a championship are there, but so are the risks of a collapse as DeBoer adjusts to SEC football. Alabama faces a tough schedule with challenging games in September, October, and November, including matchups against LSU and Oklahoma. DeBoer, with a talented roster, will need to navigate these challenges, and the Crimson Tide could be vulnerable to an unexpected stumble.
