The Pittsburgh Steelers have expanded their search for a new offensive coordinator by interviewing Jerrod Johnson, the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans, according to sources from All Steelers. Johnson’s candidacy gained traction following the success of the Texans in winning the AFC South, with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud posting impressive stats of 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns. Since the offseason commenced, Johnson has been considered for offensive coordinator positions with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and New Orleans Saints.
A former practice squad quarterback for the Steelers in 2012, Johnson has been an NFL coach since 2017. He began as part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Diversity fellowship with the San Francisco 49ers, followed by a similar role with the Indianapolis Colts the next year. From 2020 to 2021, he served as the offensive quality control coach for the Colts before taking on the role of assistant QB coach for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 season. Johnson has spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Texans.
In addition to Johnson, the Steelers have interviewed former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, and they have reportedly expressed interest in interviewing Zac Robinson, the quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Rams. There are also reports that the Steelers plan to speak with Kliff Kingsbury, the senior offensive assistant at USC.
