Hockey Hall of Famer Sam Rosen announced on Tuesday that he will retire after calling one final season of New York Rangers games on MSG Network, bringing an end to a remarkable 40-year career behind the mic. The 77-year-old broadcaster has been the voice of the Rangers through four decades, including the unforgettable 1993-94 season when the team won the Stanley Cup.

Reflecting on his long tenure, Rosen said during a conference call with reporters, “I would probably say to you, are you kidding? How can anyone last that long … doing the same thing? It’s been a wonderful ride. I loved sports growing up. I played sports growing up, and to be involved in sports the way I have been has been just the thrill of a lifetime.” He added that his dream ending would be for the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup again in the upcoming season.

Rosen explained his decision to retire by saying, “It’s time to spend a little more time with my wife, with my family, and to go out on top. Fans have been great and so complimentary, and they’ve inspired me. I realize that I’ve touched a lot of people, and it’s now time to say thank you very much and put a big, big bow on it. I think everyone at the Garden and the network agrees this will be a big finish, and I’m hoping the Rangers will have a big year to cap it all off.”

Beloved by generations of Rangers fans for his passion, humor, and exceptional broadcasting talent, Rosen enjoyed a memorable 20-year partnership with former Rangers goalie John Davidson. In the 2024-25 season, Rosen and Joe Micheletti will work together in the MSG booth for their 19th season. Rosen also had the privilege of calling games alongside Hockey Hall of Famer Phil Esposito after succeeding Jim Gordon as the Voice of the Rangers.
