BREAKING NEWS: Tigers confirms the return of Top super start player after devastating injury

Former Tigers Top Prospect Casey Mize Impresses in First Rehab Start at Toledo

The Detroit Tigers are eager to see young pitcher casey maize rejoin their rotation by the end of August. Mize, once a highly regarded prospect, began his injury rehab assignment on Thursday with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.

The right-hander delivered a strong performance against Jacksonville. Prior to his injury, Mize had a 2-6 record with a 4.23 ERA over 78.2 innings, recording 58 strikeouts and 21 walks.

Mize, the Tigers’ 2018 first-round pick out of Auburn, is still working his way back after undergoing Tommy John surgery following two starts in 2022. Although he returned late in the 2023 season, this year was meant to be his first full campaign at the Major League level since 2021. During that season, Mize posted a 7-9 record with a 3.71 ERA across 150.1 innings, striking out 118 and walking 41. A successful return in September could help Mize secure a spot in the 2025 rotation alongside ace Tarik Skubal. Detroit boasts a group of young pitchers vying for next season’s rotation, including Ty Madden and Wilmer Flores at Triple-A, as well as Keider Montero and Sawyer Gipson-Long, who have already seen Major League action.

Mize isn’t the only Tiger on a rehab assignment in Toledo. Outfielder Kerry Carpenter began his rehab on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old started in right field for the Mud Hens on Thursday night, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout while leading off. In his first rehab game on Tuesday, where he was the designated hitter, Carpenter went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. After sitting out Wednesday’s game, Thursday marked his first appearance in the field. The Tigers hope to have him back later this month.

Carpenter was sidelined in late May with a lumbar spine stress fracture, which placed him on the 60-day injured list. His absence was a blow to Detroit’s offense, as the third-year player was having a breakout season, posting a .283/.342/.572/.914 slash line with eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 50 games.
