The Chicago Cubs appear poised to compete for the National League Central title in 2025. Their aggressive approach was evident when they traded for expiring outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. However, they may not be done adding top-tier talent via trades.
Christopher Kline of FanSided has suggested that the Cubs could target San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease in a blockbuster deal this offseason. Cease, entering his final year of team control, is projected by Spotrac to secure a $108 million contract in free agency next winter.
“Cease’s time with the White Sox had its ups and downs, but his individual achievements were undeniable,” Kline noted. “The Cubs offer a legitimate shot at contention in the NL Central. While Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga provide a strong foundation at the top of the rotation, pitching depth remains a glaring issue for Jed Hoyer’s roster. Cease would address many of those weaknesses with his durability and elite skill set.”
If the Cubs manage to acquire Cease, they would likely be projected as favorites to win the NL Central heading into 2025. However, the success of such a move hinges on their ability to either extend his contract or re-sign him in free agency. With limited financial flexibility, the Cubs must ensure that trading for multiple high-profile players this offseason doesn’t result in losing them to free agency next year. If the front office is willing to take the gamble, Cease could return to Chicago before the season begins.
