Three Potential Trade Destinations for Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal
The Detroit Tigers are not compelled to trade their ace, Tarik Skubal, who is under team control for two more years and earning just $2.65 million this season. However, Skubal’s agent, Scott Boras, is known for guiding his clients to free agency, especially when they are among the best at their position.
Skubal, 27, exemplifies such a player with his league-leading 2.41 ERA and 0.879 WHIP in 116 first-half innings, along with 140 strikeouts and just 21 walks. Despite USA Today’s Bob Nightengale dismissing trade rumors as “silly,” Skubal remains the Tigers’ most valuable trade asset. The Tigers have multiple roster needs, particularly in their lineup, making a trade a potentially smart move. Here are three potential landing spots for Skubal:
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles, boasting the top-rated farm system as of 2024 and a plethora of young, major league-ready position players, are well-equipped to make a play for Skubal. With Corbin Burnes performing as expected and Grayson Rodriguez showcasing his potential, the Orioles’ rotation still faces challenges due to injuries sidelining three starters. Adding Skubal would significantly bolster their World Series aspirations.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Similar to the Orioles, the Dodgers’ rotation has been hit hard by injuries, despite the expected return of Clayton Kershaw. Only four pitchers have made more than 10 starts, with 14 pitchers starting a game this season. The Dodgers’ farm system, though not as top-heavy as the Orioles’, remains deep and could provide the talent needed to acquire Skubal. Prospects like Dalton Rushing and Andy Pages might be key pieces in a trade package.
San Diego Padres
With a consistently strong farm system headlined by Ethan Salas and Robby Snelling, the Padres are another viable destination for Skubal. The Padres’ rotation has gaps due to Yu Darvish’s personal leave and previous injuries, along with Joe Musgrove’s stint on the IL.
