Just In: Texans New Coach lands in-person head coach interviews with Commanders, Falcons

Texans’ offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik, has become a sought-after candidate in the head coach market following Houston’s impressive run to the Divisional Round in the 2023-24 season. Slowik, who played a pivotal role in the Texans’ resurgence, has secured in-person head coach interviews with the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons. Tom Pellissero of the NFL Network reported the news, noting that these interviews mark Slowik’s second meeting with each franchise, emphasizing his impact on their coaching searches.

Falcons announce completed interview with Bobby Slowik

In his inaugural season as Houston’s offensive coordinator, Slowik significantly contributed to the team’s success. Previously with the Washington Redskins in 2011 and later the San Francisco 49ers, where he rose to passing game coordinator in 2022, Slowik joined the Texans when DeMeco Ryans became head coach. Under Slowik’s guidance, the Texans’ offense finished the regular season ranked 12th in the NFL, averaging 342.4 yards per game, a notable improvement from their 31st ranking and 283.5 YPG the previous year. The addition of rookie CJ Stroud, who threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, further boosted the team’s performance.

Although the Commanders and Falcons may lack a player like Stroud, they both face significant offensive challenges. Atlanta ranked 17th in the league with an average of 334.3 YPG, while Washington ranked 24th with 312.8 YPG. Recognizing Slowik’s success with the Texans, both franchises see the potential in hiring him as their head coach. Despite extensive coaching searches, Slowik remains a top candidate for both the Falcons and Commanders, with the hope that his impact on the Texans’ offense can be replicated for their teams.
