Clemson Seeks Extra Year of Eligibility for Defensive Lineman DeMonte Capehart

Clemson defensive lineman DeMonte Capehart has applied for a waiver to remain with the Tigers in 2025, according to head coach Dabo Swinney. The waiver, if approved, would grant Capehart a sixth year of eligibility, taking advantage of the additional year provided to players during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Capehart, a former blue-chip recruit from South Carolina, is currently enrolled at Clemson and preparing for a potential return to the team next season. Swinney noted the decision is expected before February 6, the deadline for Capehart to declare for the NFL Draft. “Hoping for some good news there,” Swinney said, expressing optimism about retaining the 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive tackle.

Capehart’s college career has not reached the dominant level many anticipated. Over 45 games, he has recorded 51 tackles, including 11 for loss, and two sacks. His playing time was limited early, with only 20 snaps in each of his first two seasons. By 2022, he saw an expanded role, playing 179 snaps and contributing 16 tackles, five of which were for loss.

The 2024 season began with high expectations for Capehart as a starter, but an ankle injury sustained during the mid-season loss to Louisville sidelined him for three games. Despite the setback, he made 27 tackles in 11 appearances, including six starts, though he registered just 1.5 tackles for loss and no sacks.

Swinney Updates Status of DeMonte Capehart for 2025

Retaining Capehart for 2025 would be a significant boost for Clemson’s defensive line, which struggled to stop the run in 2024. His presence could help the Tigers strengthen their interior defense and address key weaknesses. The team and fans now await the NCAA’s decision in the coming weeks.
