Nashville SC is reportedly considering US Men’s National Team assistant B.J. Callahan as the leading candidate for their head coaching position, according to The Athletic.
Tom Bogert revealed that discussions are ongoing between Callahan and Nashville SC, but no agreement has been reached yet. Callahan currently serves as an assistant under Gregg Berhalter on the USMNT, with the Copa America approaching. He previously took on the role of interim manager during the USA’s victorious CONCACAF Nations League campaign before Berhalter’s return.
Callahan would replace Gary Smith, who was dismissed in May. Smith was Nashville’s only head coach to date, leading the team to the MLS playoffs in each of his four seasons. Interim head coach Rumba Munthali has managed the team since Smith’s departure, achieving a 1-2-1 record. Nashville is currently ninth in the Eastern Conference, with only four wins in their first 16 games, and would need to play a playoff match to reach the postseason if the season ended today.
If Callahan is appointed, he will have talented players like Hany Mukhtar and Walker Zimmerman, who occupy designated player spots, at his disposal. Callahan has no prior head coaching experience at the club level but has been an assistant with the Philadelphia Union and Villanova Wildcats before joining the national team.
The focus remains on a successful Copa America campaign for the USMNT, which boasts a wealth of talent in top European leagues, with Christian Pulisic as a key player.
