Texas Secures Commitment from 3-Star Center Jamie Vinson, Former Vanderbilt Signee
Texas basketball has made a significant addition to its 2024 recruiting class by securing a commitment from Jamie Vinson, a three-star center from Oak Hill Academy. Previously committed to Vanderbilt, Vinson chose Texas over several other programs including Kentucky, South Carolina, Rutgers, Cal, Ole Miss, and Texas Tech, as reported by On3’s Joe Tipton.
Strengthening the Longhorns’ Frontcourt
Head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns have added a crucial component to their frontcourt with the signing of Vinson, joining four-star power forward Nic Codie from Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, TX. The Longhorns’ 2024 class also features elite five-star shooting guard Tre Johnson from Dallas’ Link Academy.
Key Details About Vinson
Vinson, a 6-foot-11, 210-pound center from Austin, TX, initially signed with Vanderbilt last fall but was released from his Letter of Intent following the firing of head coach Jerry Stackhouse. After reopening his recruitment in mid-April, he visited South Carolina and Kentucky before receiving a late offer from Texas in mid-May. Vinson committed to Texas approximately three weeks later.
Impact and Potential
Vinson’s commitment brings much-needed depth and potential to Texas’s frontcourt. He possesses the versatility to play both power forward and center positions due to his fluidity, ball-handling skills, and developing shooting range. Vinson’s length and athleticism enable him to excel both offensively and defensively. Offensively, he can score in the post, finish lobs, and potentially stretch the floor with his improving shooting. Defensively, his wingspan makes him a formidable shot-blocker and rebounder.
Future Outlook
Ranked as the No. 239 prospect nationally, No. 41 center, and No. 11 player from Texas in the 2024 class by the 247Sports Composite, Vinson has the potential to significantly outperform his current rankings if he continues to develop. With his physical traits and two-way potential, he is expected to be a key player for the Longhorns as they transition into their inaugural SEC season in 2024-25. The Longhorns now have one more scholarship available, which they can use to further bolster their roster.
