Mets star Pete Alonso might not need to leave New York at the trade deadline, as the Yankees are reportedly interested in acquiring him. Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggests that Alonso could be a key target for the Yankees, who are seeking to boost their infield production. He notes that Alonso, who is expected to be the top power hitter available at the deadline, could also attract interest from the Astros, Mariners, Giants, Cubs, and Twins. Although the Mets might trade Alonso, they intend to try to re-sign him in the offseason, as both the team and Alonso have a mutual affection for New York.
Bowden also mentioned that the Cubs have contacted the Mets about Alonso. The Yankees’ current first base options, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu, have struggled this season, combining for only 26 RBIs. Alonso, who becomes a free agent after the 2024 season, leads the Mets with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs, boasting a 132 OPS+.
The Mets, sitting fourth in the NL East with a 28-36 record, are 3 1/2 games behind in the NL Wild Card race. Alonso, beloved by fans since his record-breaking rookie season in 2019, has topped MLB home run charts since then. Additionally, Bowden identified starting pitcher Luis Severino as another significant trade asset for the Mets, with ESPN previously reporting the Yankees’ interest in Severino following their decision not to re-sign him last offseason.
