Bucs Sign Former Seahawks Receiver Cody Thompson
Wide receiver Cody Thompson has joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after spending much of the past four years with the Seattle Seahawks, appearing in 12 regular season games. Thompson was a new addition to the Buccaneers’ 2024 OTA practices, having signed with the team on Thursday.
The Buccaneers did not need to make a corresponding roster move as they had two open spots due to waiving wide receiver Deven Thompkins and placing former Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen on the reserve/retired list. Additionally, the Bucs have a roster exemption for German native offensive tackle Lorenz Metz, signed from the International Player Pathway program, allowing them to carry 91 players into training camp. They currently have 90 players on their roster.
Thompson (6-1, 204) entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 after playing college football at Toledo. In his rookie season, he was on the practice squads of the Chiefs, Seahawks, and Cincinnati Bengals. He returned to Seattle in 2020, spending the next two seasons on their practice squad and being elevated for five game days, primarily contributing on special teams.
A shoulder injury in the 2022 preseason placed Thompson on injured reserve for the entire Seahawks season. In 2023, he split his time between Seattle’s practice squad and active roster, playing in seven games, making one catch for 10 yards, and recording two tackles on special teams.
With Thompson’s addition, the Buccaneers now have 12 wide receivers on their 91-man roster, after taking 11 receivers to training camp last summer.
