Auburn Softball Hires Married Couple as Co-Head Coaches Following Controversial Resignation
Auburn University announced a unique move for its softball team by hiring a married couple as co-head coaches. This decision follows Mickey Dean’s resignation at the end of the 2024 season amid controversy involving former players. While unusual, this kind of dual coaching isn’t unprecedented in college softball; Tennessee previously had Ralph and Karen Weekly as co-head coaches from 2002 to 2021.
The new co-head coaches, Chris and Kate Malveaux, both come from Tennessee where they contributed significantly to the Vols’ success over the past three seasons. Chris served as the hitting coach, while Kate worked with the catchers and managed baserunning. Their strong synergy and impactful contributions were key factors in their hire, according to Auburn AD John Cohen.
Despite the novelty of hiring a married couple as co-head coaches, it’s a fitting choice for the sport. Chris Malveaux is highly regarded for his offensive strategies, helping six Lady Vols earn All-SEC honors last season, and coaching All-American KiKi Milloy to break multiple school records. Kate Malveaux started as a volunteer assistant and was promoted to a full-time role, leading her catchers to achieve significant success, including only two errors all season and consistent base-stealing prowess.
Auburn’s announcement marks a transition from one head coach to two, as Chris and Kate Malveaux replace Mickey Dean. Dean’s resignation followed allegations of mistreatment by former players, although it remains unclear if these accusations influenced his decision to step down.
