Breaking: Texas Announces the departure of a key man

Former Texas Forward Dillon Mitchell Commits to Cincinnati

Dillon Mitchell, a former five-star recruit, has committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats, remaining in the Big 12. The 6’8″, 205-pound forward, who left Texas a month ago, chose Cincinnati over Miami and Memphis. Mitchell, who also declared for the 2024 NBA Draft, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Mitchell came to Texas with high expectations, ranked as the No. 8 prospect nationally and the No. 2 small forward by the 247Sports Composite rankings. The Montverde Academy product was seen as a potential lottery pick in the 2023 NBA Draft due to his elite athleticism.

As a freshman, Mitchell struggled with shooting, which limited his effectiveness. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game, shooting only 21.9 percent on long twos and avoiding three-point attempts altogether. His free-throw percentage was also low at 40.5 percent.

At the draft combine, Mitchell showed improved shooting in drills but withdrew from the draft when this didn’t translate to scrimmages. In his sophomore year, he improved his ball-handling and mid-range shooting, leading to better performance in transition and around the rim. His free-throw percentage improved to 59.8 percent, but he still struggled from three-point range.

In the 2023-24 season, Mitchell played 29.0 minutes per game, averaging 9.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks, with a field-goal percentage of 58.5 percent.

Meanwhile, Texas is pursuing New Mexico transfer forward JT Toppin, who may turn professional after a strong NBA Draft Combine performance.
