Breaking: Yankees lose a key player due to a dangerous ailment

Yankees Lose Key Reliever to COVID-19 List and Make Roster Moves

It’s surprising to see a player placed on the COVID-19 list in 2024, given its prominence in 2020-2021. However, on Monday, the New York Yankees placed reliever Ian Hamilton on the seven-day COVID-19 list. There’s speculation it might be a “phantom” stint since Hamilton hasn’t been performing well lately, with a 3.18 ERA, 3.64 FIP, and 1.41 WHIP alongside 19 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings this season. He’s struggled recently, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits over his last 5 1/3 innings. This break might benefit Hamilton, who remains a key bullpen piece for the Yankees.

In corresponding moves, the Yankees called up left-hander Clayton Andrews and designated right-hander Colby White for assignment. Andrews, acquired from the Brewers before spring training, was designated for assignment in April but cleared waivers and returned to Triple-A Scranton. He has struggled in Triple-A, with a 6.60 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 15 innings, striking out 18 but walking 12 batters (7.2 BB/9). The Yankees need pitchers to cover innings, and Andrews will have an opportunity to contribute.

White, acquired last week before the series against the Rays, might return if he clears waivers, similar to Andrews. Despite the recent bullpen changes, the Yankees have benefited from strong performances by their starting rotation, which has allowed their bullpen to rest. Ideally, Andrews will not be needed in high-leverage situations.
