Clemson DC Search Takes a New Turn with Emerging Frontrunner
Clemson’s hunt for a new defensive coordinator has reportedly taken a significant turn, with a fresh frontrunner now emerging for the role. This search stands as a pivotal storyline for head coach Dabo Swinney and his program, as returning the defense to a championship-caliber level is essential for the Tigers to reclaim their national contender status.
Initially, rumors pointed to Tennessee’s Tim Banks as the lead candidate to replace Wes Goodwin, who is widely expected to be dismissed. However, according to Scott Hamilton of The Post and Courier, Banks is no longer in contention for the position. Instead, Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator, Al Golden, has risen as the top target.
Al Golden’s Impressive Resume
Golden, who has led Notre Dame’s defense since 2022, has built one of the most formidable defensive units in college football. The Irish rank 6th nationally in total defense this season, allowing just 295.4 yards per game. Their run defense, an area where Clemson struggled in 2024, ranks 32nd nationally, conceding 127.9 rushing yards per game—significantly better than Clemson’s 150.8.
Golden’s defense has excelled in the College Football Playoff, shutting down top-tier opponents. In a 27-17 win over Indiana, the Irish allowed only 278 total yards and held the Hoosiers to 2.3 yards per rush. They followed up with a dominant 23-10 victory against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, limiting the Bulldogs to 296 total yards and a mere 2.1 yards per carry.
The Challenge of Securing Golden
Swinney might need to wait before pursuing Golden, as Notre Dame remains in contention for the National Championship Game on January 20 if they defeat Penn State in the Orange Bowl. However, the potential payoff could make the wait worthwhile.
Golden brings a wealth of experience that extends beyond his success at Notre Dame. He previously served as head coach at Temple and Miami, and his NFL background includes stints with the Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals. His pedigree as a defensive leader and his connection to a prestigious program like Notre Dame would likely energize Clemson fans and players alike.
