Saints facing major questions at offensive tackle, but GM Mickey Loomis is optimistic

As the New Orleans Saints approach the 2024 offseason, there are significant uncertainties surrounding their offensive tackle positions, particularly with former first-round picks Trevor Penning and Ryan Ramczyk, who started the 2023 season at those positions.

In the previous season, the Saints made the decision to bench Penning after a disappointing string of five starts. Towards the end of the season, Penning struggled to see much playing time, even with multiple injuries affecting the team’s offensive line.

Mickey Loomis shoots down rumor, says he isn't stepping down as GM

Ramczyk, on the other hand, concluded the season on injured reserve due to a persistent knee injury that had troubled him for several years, prompting speculation about the possibility of an early retirement. General Manager Mickey Loomis, speaking on Wednesday, expressed a cautious but optimistic outlook. Regarding Ramczyk, who is under a three-year extension worth $96 million signed in 2021, Loomis acknowledged the concern for a good player facing health challenges and yet conveyed a positive expectation about Ramczyk’s future.

In the case of Penning, Loomis conceded that the organization had not done him any favors. The 2022 No. 19 overall pick had a challenging rookie season with a severe toe injury, followed by a Lisfranc injury in Week 18 that significantly impacted his offseason preparation. Loomis reflected on the likelihood that the Saints might have rushed Penning’s development, given the time he missed. Despite the setbacks, Loomis expressed continued confidence in Penning’s potential and emphasized the need for improved development and preparation in the upcoming offseason, assuring that the team will have a comprehensive plan to support Penning’s readiness.
