The Baltimore Orioles achieved a notable feat on Wednesday by staging a comeback victory against the Kansas City Royals, marking a milestone they hadn’t reached in 21 years. Inclement weather delayed the conclusion of their series, but the Orioles’ perseverance paid off when James McCann delivered a two-RBI walk-off single, securing a 4-3 win over the Royals and elevating their season record to 4-2.
This thrilling victory marked the Orioles’ second walk-off win in just three games, following their 6-4 triumph over Kansas City on Monday, where Jordan Westburg’s two-run homer sealed the deal. Remarkably, this is the first time since 2003 that the Orioles have clinched two walk-off victories within their first six games of the season, a feat achieved only twice before in franchise history — in 2001 and 1964, according to MLB.com.
Despite playing in front of a diminished crowd due to the weather, with only 11,488 spectators in attendance, the Orioles faced a formidable challenge from Kansas City pitcher Cole Ragans, who held them to just one hit through the initial seven innings, while the Orioles trailed 3-0.
However, the Orioles rallied in the eighth inning, scoring two runs on a Gunnar Henderson RBI sacrifice fly and an Adley Rutschman RBI single. In the ninth inning, McCann’s clutch single drove home Ryan Mountcastle and Cedric Mullins, securing the dramatic victory for the Orioles.
Following a day off on Thursday, the Orioles will embark on their first road series away from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, facing the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Subsequently, they will journey to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox before returning home to host the Milwaukee Brewers on April 12th.
