The Houston Texans have announced the re-signing of defensive end Derek Barnett and linebacker Neville Hewitt, both of whom were unrestricted free agents. While the financial details of their one-year deals have not been disclosed, media reports confirm the signings.
Barnett initially joined the Texans after being claimed off waivers on November 27, following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles. In his six regular-season appearances for Houston, including four starts, Barnett recorded 19 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and eight tackles for loss. Additionally, he contributed seven tackles and one sack in two playoff games.
Drafted 14th overall by the Eagles in the 2017 NFL Draft from Tennessee, Barnett has accumulated 169 tackles, 24 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, 87 QB hits, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries (one for a touchdown) in 79 games, with 49 starts.
Meanwhile, Hewitt, who is set to turn 31 on Saturday, led the NFL in special teams tackles last season with 14. Throughout his career spanning 129 games, including 44 starts, Hewitt has amassed 440 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Marshall in 2015 and has played for the Miami Dolphins (2015-17), New York Jets (2018-20), and Texans (2021-23).
