Former ACC Player of the Year Steps In as Acting Duke Basketball Head Coach
Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer missed his first game as head coach, with associate head coach Chris Carrawell stepping in to lead the team. Known for his high-energy style, Carrawell, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, brought the same passion and intensity to his role as acting head coach that he displayed during his playing days. Carrawell was a key figure in four consecutive Duke regular-season conference titles under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Filling in for the 37-year-old Scheyer, who was sidelined due to illness, the 47-year-old Carrawell guided the No. 4 Blue Devils (11-2, 3-0 ACC) to a strong start against SMU (11-2, 2-0 ACC) on Saturday. By the first media timeout, Duke held a 15-7 lead, and they were up 28-20 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Carrawell, a St. Louis native, has been a member of the Duke coaching staff since 2018. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2021 when Jon Scheyer was named head coach-in-waiting during Krzyzewski’s final season. Saturday marked Carrawell’s first game as acting head coach, and he was vocal and animated on the sidelines throughout.
According to an official statement from the program, Jon Scheyer is expected to return for Duke’s next game when the Blue Devils host Jeff Capel’s Pitt Panthers on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. In the meantime, Carrawell helped maintain Duke’s momentum, as the team looked to extend its season-best seven-game winning streak.
