GOOD NEWS: Saints Set to Sign Former Commanders Defensive Rookie of the Year

The New Orleans Saints are anticipated to make a move for Chase Young, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Washington Commanders. After being traded to the San Francisco 49ers last season, Young now enters free agency with a chance to revitalize his career. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz suggests that the Saints could be the landing spot for Young, who might opt for a short-term contract to prove himself.

Young’s performance with the 49ers fell short of expectations, likely due to his struggles with injuries. Despite a promising start with Washington, his impact waned after the trade. Nevertheless, Schatz sees potential for Young to rejuvenate his game with the Saints, particularly given their pressing need for improved pass rush.

Considering the Saints’ history of contract restructuring and their dire need for defensive reinforcements, Young could fit well on a one-year deal alongside veteran Cameron Jordan. This arrangement would allow Young to showcase his abilities and potentially secure a more lucrative contract in the future.

As Young enters free agency, several teams, including the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions, are expected to show interest in bolstering their pass rush. However, the Commanders, despite their need for defensive talent, are unlikely to pursue Young after their previous experience with him.

The decision to trade Young might have been tough for the Commanders, given their investment in him, but it was ultimately the right move. His inability to replicate his rookie success, coupled with persistent injury concerns, made parting ways the prudent choice for both parties.
