Vikings Expected to Move On From $67 Million Safety Cam Bynum
Minnesota Vikings safety Cam Bynum could be on his way out as the team heads into a pivotal offseason with 11 key players set to hit free agency. Despite a standout season, Bynum may not fit into the Vikings’ long-term plans as they prioritize other positions for contract extensions after the playoffs.
A 2021 fourth-round pick, Bynum has delivered a career-best performance in the final year of his rookie deal. He’s posted personal highs with three interceptions, 10 passes defensed, and the lowest passer rating allowed when targeted (83.9) as a starter. Analysts project that Bynum could command a contract similar to Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney’s four-year, $67 million deal if he continues his upward trajectory.
However, according to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, Bynum may have priced himself out of the Vikings’ budget. “There were talks before training camp, so there’s mutual interest,” Wolfson explained on SKOR North, “but I don’t see this front office making a heavy financial investment in the safety position.”
Vikings Likely to Prioritize Byron Murphy Jr.
Minnesota’s offseason decisions hinge on how they manage their 27 impending free agents. If the team uses the franchise tag on quarterback Sam Darnold, it would consume $41 million of their $63.2 million effective cap space, leaving limited flexibility for other moves.
With all three starting cornerbacks hitting free agency, first-time Pro Bowler Byron Murphy Jr., who recorded a career-high six interceptions and 14 passes defensed this season, is expected to be a priority. Star Tribune beat writer Ben Goessling suggested that if it comes down to choosing between retaining Murphy or Bynum, the Vikings will likely favor Murphy due to the greater positional value of cornerbacks.
Preparing for Life After Bynum
Despite Bynum’s stellar play, the Vikings are well-positioned at safety. Third-year player Theo Jackson has been quietly impressive in his development, excelling in Brian Flores’ versatile defensive schemes and showing potential to step into a larger role. Additionally, veteran Harrison Smith, despite being a pending free agent and nearing retirement, is expected to return after a strong season.
While Bynum’s viral celebrations and on-field performance have endeared him to fans, the Vikings appear ready to move forward with cost-effective options, prioritizing other areas of need as they prepare for the 2025 season.
