JUST IN: Virginia Tech bringing back legend to replace Brent Pry

Bringing back a coaching legend like Bud Foster is an obvious win for Virginia Tech football and head coach Brent Pry. After the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Pry revealed that Foster will stay involved with the program as an adviser, a move sure to thrill Hokies fans.

During preparations for the game against Minnesota, Foster worked closely with interim defensive coordinator Shawn Quinn after the departure of Chris Marve. While Foster won’t return as defensive coordinator, Pry announced he’ll have a limited but ongoing role within the program. This raises intriguing questions about his future contributions—whether as a mentor or something more substantial.

Meanwhile, Pry has already started reshaping his staff, hiring former West Virginia offensive line coach Matt Moore to replace Ron Crook. Moore’s addition has brought immediate results, with two former Mountaineer linemen transferring to Virginia Tech.

As for the defensive coordinator search, Pry acknowledged progress, though bowl season has slowed the process. A decision seems imminent, and while Foster won’t directly influence the hire, his expertise will likely guide the process in subtle ways.

For Pry, whose 2025 season feels pivotal, having Foster’s legendary presence in the program is a strategic and meaningful move.
